Legal Services of the Hudson Valley
An Overview of Services Provided to Seniors


Presenters: Michael S. Linker, Staff Attorney, Elder Unit of LSHV  
                    

Michael will provide an overview of a wide range of services available to Seniors who are lower income in Westchester, Putnam and surrounding  counties. He will cover all of the basics, on Wills, Living Wills, Health Care Proxies and Powers of Attorney. He will also cover how Legal Services can assist clients in Medicaid Planning  and applying for Pooled Supplemental Needs Trusts. Legal Services is also available to represent clients in Fair Hearings to appeal a reduction in services by Managed Long Term Care Programs and also for housing concerns.

NOTE: Therapists from Northern Westchester Hospital at Chappaqua Crossing will also provide a short presentation introducing “LSVT” Therapy, and their new and innovative program to help improve speech, mobility, flexibility and balance for patients with Parkinson’s Disease

Getting Beyond the Warning Signs of Dementia: The Value of a Differential Diagnosis

Presenters: Pat Gaston, LMSW & Kristen Bonistall, MS, LMSW

This presentation will provide an overview of what a differential diagnosis is; why it is important; the type of testing the evaluation process includes; and treatment strategies and services that are provided. The presenters will discuss evaluation and follow-up services available through Westchester’s Burke Memory Evaluation and Treatment Service as well as other evaluation sites in the region.  If you are involved in providing services to individuals with dementia, or looking to gain a better understanding of what to do after symptoms of dementia are observed this program will provide you with excellent resources to utilize in your work.

A communal discussion about the changes in the Labor Law (subsequent to the Fair Labor Standards Act) affecting overtime payment for home care workers. While we do not have a speaker scheduled we would like to hear how agencies are coping with these changes which have already gone into effect this past week. There could be many unintended consequences both for home health workers and patients which everyone should be apprised of. We would appreciate if those of you who are up on this issue could share your understanding with others at the meeting.

To achieve improvements in end-of-life care the problem must be addressed at all levels, from individual rights, to family and caregiving relationships, to institutional and health systems reform.

This presentation will summarize ethical and legal standards, review why good decision making is so difficult, and discuss new approaches and designs that are currently being implemented in a rapidly changing health care system.

Ms. Goodman will talk about methods used to help families resolve conflicts over care options and plans that need to be made for their Elders.  Participants will learn how to ask questions, how to identify positions, interests and issues, and how to use this information to ease tensions and disputes.  Everyone will surely have a number of invaluable "takeaways" from this presentation.

Palliative Care is a growing service which will be available in many settings.  Putnam Hospital has developed a model Palliative Care Program.  Dr Agarwal and Maureen Pace will describe the program. They will discuss how it functions within the hospital and the important needs that it addresses to help patients and families with palliation of symptoms, establishing goals for care, understanding options and choices and very importantly “an extra layer of support”.  Find out more about what is happening in our region by attending this program.
